Father\u2019s Day is June 16, y\u2019all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know why I said y\u2019all. I think I was trying to create a sense of urgency. I digress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Father’s Day is that special time of year when dads everywhere are celebrated with BBQs, neckties, and homemade cards. But have you ever wondered how this holiday actually came to be? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pull up a chair and let\u2019s chat about the origins of Father’s Day and how it found its spot on our calendars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We Have a Mom to Thank<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I know we just celebrated Mother\u2019s Day, but it\u2019s worth noting that Father\u2019s Day was started by a mom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonora Smart Dodd<\/a> was inspired by her own father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised six children after his wife\u2019s death. Sonora felt that fathers deserved a day of recognition just like mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re a dad, and you didn\u2019t serve in the Civil War, don\u2019t worry, you can still celebrate Father\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Father’s Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The lovely Sonora didn\u2019t just declare, \u201cIt\u2019s Father\u2019s Day, and it will be forever enshrined!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, she had to do quite a bit of legwork. In 1910, she approached the suits at the Spokane Ministerial Alliance<\/a> and suggested June 5th, her father\u2019s birthday, as the day to celebrate fathers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No guff, no resistance. They said, \u201cCool,\u201d and determined that June 19 would mark the first official Father\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaining Traction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite this initial celebration, Father’s Day didn\u2019t catch on as quickly as Mother\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people saw it as a commercial gimmick pushed by retailers to sell more goods.Oh, if they only lived today when every day has become a Hallmark National Day of something or other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, the idea persisted thanks to the efforts of Ms. Dodd and the backing of trade groups and advertisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t until 1924 that Father’s Day received a major boost when President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national holiday. He encouraged states to celebrate the day, although it still wasn\u2019t an official federal holiday. Over the next few decades, various attempts were made to formalize Father’s Day, but it faced resistance from Congress (surprise, surprise), which feared the holiday would become too commercialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, I have to chuckle knowing there was a time in our nation\u2019s history when Congress was wary about capitalism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making It Official<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fast forward four decades to the 1960s when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u2026it wasn\u2019t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed it into law<\/a>, officially establishing Father\u2019s Day as a national holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hey, better late than never. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Celebrations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Father\u2019s Day isn\u2019t just an American thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s celebrated around the world<\/a> from Brasil, Germany, and Mexico to South Africa and Thailand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it\u2019s a heartfelt card, a new set of golf clubs (very American), or simply spending quality time together, the day is all about acknowledging the contributions and sacrifices of dads everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
